From regional roots to a national UK photography agency

United National Photographers (UNP) began in 1997 as United Northern Photographers. It was established to provide a carefully coordinated, quality-led approach to press, PR and editorial photography.

Founded in August 1997 by picture editor Hamlet Mejloumian, UNP was built on a simple conviction: photography is most effective when experienced editorial judgement guides every stage of commissioning, production and delivery.

Rather than maintaining offices throughout the country, UNP operates through one central UK Picture Desk, coordinating carefully selected local photographers to provide consistent national coverage with local knowledge.

What began as a regional specialist service developed into a national UK photography agency. Today, UNP supports organisations requiring dependable photography across individual locations, several regions or wider UK programmes.

We don’t simply assign photographers—we coordinate photography that supports our clients’ reputations. Good pictures don’t happen by accident; they are planned, briefed and edited with purpose.

— Hamlet Mejloumian, Founder

The Picture Desk behind every assignment

Many photography agencies focus primarily on connecting clients with photographers. UNP combines its nationwide photographer network with a central Picture Desk responsible for reviewing and clarifying the brief, selecting the appropriately experienced local specialist and coordinating the practical requirements, captioning and delivery.

This structure allows photography commissioned in London to be managed through the same central process as an assignment in Edinburgh or Belfast. Clients retain local knowledge while receiving consistent briefing, communication and delivery through one accountable team.

The model supports individual assignments as well as coordinated national programmes across press photography, PR photography, corporate photography and event photography.

Recognised within professional photography

UNP has been featured in publications including the British Journal of Photography and PRWeek, reflecting the agency’s long-standing role within professional photography and communications.

The UNP in the Press archive records trade coverage and features from across the agency’s development, documenting nearly three decades of editorial heritage, nationwide growth and Picture Desk practice.

Editorial control in a fragmented media landscape

As media platforms have multiplied, organisations increasingly require imagery capable of working across print, broadcast, digital and social communications. A photograph may need to support a press release, appear within a corporate report, work across social channels and remain useful within an organisation’s long-term visual archive.

UNP’s Picture Desk was designed around this reality. It does not simply distribute assignments. It provides editorial oversight across briefing, photographer selection, practical coordination, image preparation, captioning and delivery according to the requirements of each commission.

This helps ensure that photography produced in different locations retains a clear purpose and consistent professional standard, whether it is intended for editorial publication, corporate communications, internal use or a wider campaign.

The principles behind this approach are explored further in UNP’s practitioner-led research on the strategic management of visual assets in public relations .

Trusted by editors and communications teams

Over nearly three decades, UNP has developed working relationships with communications teams, editors, producers and picture desks across national, regional and specialist media.

This combination of editorial and communications experience allows UNP to anticipate how photographs may be selected, cropped, captioned and published long after delivery. It also informs how briefs are interpreted before a photographer reaches the location.

UNP photography has supported editorial, corporate and public-sector communications across a wide range of environments. Long-term trust is maintained through consistent briefing, dependable assignment management and photography that remains appropriate to its intended audience.

Why clients choose United National Photographers

United National Photographers combines local expertise with central Picture Desk coordination. Clients gain access to an established UK photographer network without having to identify, assess and manage individual suppliers independently in every location.

Each brief is matched to an appropriately experienced photographer, while communication, professional standards and image delivery remain centrally coordinated through the UNP Picture Desk.

The model works for a one-off editorial portrait, a time-sensitive press assignment or a nationwide communications programme. To book a photographer, send the brief to the Picture Desk, which will review the requirements, identify the right specialist and oversee the assignment through to final delivery.
