From the UNP Picture Desk

Working with UNP — freelance photographers and drone operators

Editorial photography · Real assignments · Long-term professional relationships

Working with UNP means joining a professionally managed network of freelance photographers and specialist contributors delivering press, PR, corporate, event and editorial photography assignments across the United Kingdom.

How to work with UNP and introduce your portfolio

Many photographers are introduced to UNP once and remain part of the network for years. Those relationships are built through professional conduct, dependable communication, strong photography and mutual respect.

The relationship

What working with UNP means

UNP works with freelance photographers as professional contributors to a centrally managed national photography service.

The UNP Picture Desk receives the client brief, reviews the requirements and selects a photographer according to experience, location, availability and suitability for the assignment.

We do not operate as a public job board, an automated booking platform or an unmanaged directory of photographers. Clients commission UNP, and the Picture Desk remains responsible for coordinating the assignment.

Photographers work independently on location while remaining connected to the Picture Desk for briefing, logistics, questions, changing circumstances and delivery requirements.

Nationwide photographer network

Where UNP works with freelance photographers

UNP commissions photographers throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Network requirements change according to client activity, existing geographic coverage and demand for particular photographic experience or specialist capability.

Photographers do not need to be based in a major city to introduce their work. Reliable regional and local coverage is important to a nationwide photography service.

When contacting the Picture Desk, tell us where you are based and the towns, cities or regions you can cover reliably. Practical coverage is more useful than a long list of locations you could theoretically travel to.

Managed photographer network

How UNP selects photographers

Proximity alone does not determine who receives an assignment. Photographer selection reflects the complete brief.

Relevant experience

The portfolio and previous assignments must demonstrate an appropriate understanding of the subject, sector and intended use.

Location and practical coverage

Local knowledge, travel time and the ability to reach the assignment reliably remain important operational considerations.

People skills

Many UNP assignments involve members of the public, employees, patients, senior leaders, ministers, celebrities or vulnerable subjects.

Professional reliability

Confirmations, arrival times, communication and delivery deadlines must be treated as professional commitments.

Technical suitability

Equipment, lighting, sound, remote transmission, aerial capability or other technical requirements may influence selection.

Previous client familiarity

Where a photographer has successfully covered earlier assignments, that knowledge may support continuity on future work.

Photographers are selected for what they can create.

They are remembered for how reliably they deliver it.

Shared professional standards

What UNP expects from freelance photographers

Before and during the assignment

  • Read the complete brief and raise questions promptly
  • Confirm availability only when the assignment can be completed reliably
  • Arrive punctually and prepared for the location
  • Dress and behave appropriately for the client environment
  • Work confidently and respectfully with people
  • Follow access, security, confidentiality and site requirements
  • Keep the Picture Desk informed if circumstances change

Editing and delivery

  • Produce clean, coherent and technically reliable imagery
  • Follow the agreed shot list without limiting editorial judgement
  • Complete editing within the agreed timescale
  • Supply accurate names and contextual information where required
  • Follow the requested file format, naming and delivery process
  • Retain material securely and respect confidential information
  • Respond promptly to reasonable delivery queries

A two-way professional relationship

What photographers can expect from UNP

Good assignments depend on clear information moving in both directions.

The Picture Desk aims to give photographers the information needed to understand the assignment, represent UNP professionally and deliver the required photography.

  • A central Picture Desk contact
  • A written brief or confirmed assignment instructions
  • Available information about timing, location and contacts
  • Clarification of the intended photography and delivery deadline
  • Assignment-specific rates and terms confirmed before work begins
  • Support when access, timings or circumstances change
  • Continuity where a photographer-client relationship works well
  • Direct, respectful professional communication

Portfolio introduction

How to introduce your work

Send one concise email containing the information the Picture Desk needs to assess your experience and coverage.

Email: portfolio@unp.co.uk

Portfolios are reviewed periodically and against current or anticipated network requirements. A portfolio submission does not guarantee a reply or future assignments.

Include

  • Your full name and business name, where applicable
  • The town or city where you are based
  • The geographic areas you can cover reliably
  • A direct link to your professional website
  • Relevant press, PR, corporate or event photography
  • Your principal photographic specialisms
  • Relevant qualifications, permissions or accreditations
  • A short note about availability and delivery capability

What helps us assess your work

Portfolio guidelines

Real commissioned work

Show completed editorial, PR, corporate, event or specialist assignments rather than relying primarily on test shoots.

People-focused photography

Include work demonstrating how you direct, observe and photograph people in real professional environments.

Coherent editing

A concise, carefully edited portfolio is more useful than a large gallery containing every type of photography.

Professional presentation

Use a website that loads reliably and allows the Picture Desk to review complete assignments without requiring an account.

Clear specialisms

Make it easy to identify your experience in areas such as healthcare, corporate leadership, events, industrial work or drone photography.

Social media as supporting evidence

Instagram and similar platforms may support a portfolio, but they should not be the only place where professional work can be reviewed.

Commercial aerial contributors

Information for drone operators

Drone photography requires evidence that the proposed operation can be completed safely, legally and with appropriate insurance.

The requirements depend on the aircraft, location, proximity to people, airspace and category of operation. For that reason, a generic statement that somebody is simply “CAA licensed” is not sufficient.

Current guidance is available from the UK Civil Aviation Authority .

Drone introductions should include

  • Examples of completed commercial aerial assignments
  • The aircraft and camera systems normally operated
  • Operator ID and operator details where applicable
  • Relevant remote-pilot competency or qualifications
  • Details of any applicable Operational Authorisation
  • Evidence of appropriate commercial third-party insurance
  • Experience assessing airspace, access and ground risk
  • Capability to supply both stills and video, where applicable

Important information

Freelance introductions are not employment applications

UNP commissions freelance contributors assignment by assignment according to client requirements, geography, experience and availability.

  • Submitting a portfolio does not create an employment relationship
  • Inclusion in UNP contact records does not guarantee assignments
  • Previous assignments do not guarantee future work
  • Every assignment must be confirmed by the Picture Desk
  • Rates, expenses, usage, delivery and invoicing terms are agreed for the specific commission
  • Photographers remain responsible for their own business, tax, equipment and appropriate insurance arrangements

Internships and assisting

UNP does not currently offer placements

The distributed nature of our photographer network and the confidential or time-sensitive nature of many client assignments mean that UNP cannot currently provide:

  • Work-experience placements
  • Student internships
  • General assisting positions
  • Unpaid assignment shadowing

Frequently asked questions

Working with United National Photographers

How do I introduce myself to UNP?

Email a concise introduction to portfolio@unp.co.uk. Include your location, geographic coverage, specialisms and a direct link to a professional portfolio containing relevant commissioned work.

Does UNP employ photographers?

UNP primarily commissions freelance photographers and specialist contributors assignment by assignment. A portfolio introduction is not an application for permanent employment.

Does joining the UNP photographer network guarantee work?

No. Assignments depend on client requirements, location, experience, suitability and availability. Inclusion in UNP contact records or completion of a previous assignment does not guarantee future commissions.

What type of portfolio does UNP prefer?

A concise professional website containing real press, PR, corporate, event or specialist assignments is most useful. People-focused commissioned work is generally more relevant than test shoots or a social-media-only portfolio.

How does UNP choose a photographer for an assignment?

The Picture Desk considers location, relevant experience, portfolio quality, people skills, availability, technical requirements, turnaround capability and previous client familiarity.

What information does a UNP assignment brief include?

The available brief normally covers the location, timing, contacts, communications objective, required imagery and delivery expectations. Access, security and operational information is included where it has been supplied to the Picture Desk.

What must drone operators provide?

Drone operators should provide relevant commercial examples, operator information, applicable remote-pilot qualifications or competency, details of any required Operational Authorisation and evidence of suitable commercial third-party insurance.

Does UNP offer internships, work experience or assisting roles?

No. UNP does not currently offer general work-experience placements, student internships, assisting positions or unpaid assignment shadowing.
