Our Photography Sustainability Approach

This page explains the photography sustainability approachmSustainability Standards, followed by United National Photographers (UNP). We do not present this as a certified environmental standard or a formal carbon-measurement programme. Instead, it is a practical operating approach based on making sensible production decisions, reducing unnecessary travel where possible, and encouraging responsible working practices across our network.

As a nationwide photography agency, we understand that the way assignments are planned can affect travel, scheduling, equipment choices and delivery methods. Our photography sustainability approach is therefore built around day-to-day operational decisions. It is intended to help clients who want a more efficient way to commission photography without compromising on quality, professionalism or reliability.

UNP’s photography sustainability approach focuses on local allocation, efficient planning and digital delivery.

Our approach

In practical terms, our photography sustainability approach means looking first at how a shoot can be delivered efficiently. That includes asking whether the assignment can be covered by a photographer who is already based nearby, whether unnecessary long-distance travel can be avoided, and whether the brief can be handled through a streamlined digital workflow from booking to final delivery.

We believe this is a more honest and useful way to talk about sustainability in photography. Rather than making broad claims, we prefer to describe the practical steps we take to support lower-travel planning and efficient production.

Local-first coverage for Sustainability Standards

A central part of our photography sustainability approach is local-first coverage. Where possible, UNP allocates assignments to photographers who are already based close to the shoot location. For clients, this often helps reduce unnecessary travel time, simplify logistics and improve responsiveness. For production planning, it can also support a more efficient use of time and resources.

This approach is especially useful for national brands, multi-location campaigns, regional PR activity and business communications work where a central picture desk can coordinate coverage without relying on one photographer travelling long distances from one end of the country to the other.

Working practices

  • Local allocation where practical: we aim to match assignments to photographers working near the required location.
  • Lower-travel planning: for many UK jobs, our workflow is designed to avoid unnecessary domestic air travel.
  • Digital workflow: briefing, image handling and final delivery are managed primarily through digital systems.
  • Efficient equipment choices: where appropriate to the brief, we encourage the use of LED lighting and rechargeable battery systems.
  • Regional and international practicality: for some non-UK briefs, we seek local or in-region coverage where this is suitable for the assignment.

These measures form the working basis of our photography sustainability approach. They are not absolute rules for every commission, because each assignment has its own editorial, commercial, logistical and client-specific requirements. However, they provide a clear framework for making more efficient choices wherever possible.

Ethical responsibility

We believe responsible practice is about more than environmental considerations alone. Our photography sustainability approach also includes fair treatment, lawful working practices, clear communication and professional respect across our network. UNP expects freelance partners and suppliers to work ethically and in line with applicable law.

We also keep an eye on relevant industry guidance, including information published by organisations such as the Association of Photographers and AdGreen, when reviewing how shoots may be planned and delivered more efficiently.
