NHS Digital Photographer Case Study — Human-Centred Portraits & Reportage

Since 1997, UNP has operated as a trusted NHS Digital photographer partner, helping the healthcare sector bridge the gap between complex technology and the people who use it. For the NHS’s landmark “online hospital” initiative, our network documented the faces behind the digital transformation—doctors, nurses, and clinicians across England, Scotland, and Wales—to create a warm, accessible image library for PR and national press.

Navigating the complexities of a nationwide rollout requires more than just technical skill; it requires reliability. While formal endorsements are restricted, Christopher Dayman, Senior Film Production Manager at NHS England, highlights why our model works:

“UNP’s network is invaluable for organisations like ours, as we need reliable coverage, nationwide.”

NHS Digital Photographer Impact on Human-Led Healthcare

In the world of digital health, technology can often feel clinical or detached. The role of an NHS Digital photographer is to re-humanise that narrative. By capturing real-world interactions—a doctor checking a tablet at a bedside or a patient engaging with the NHS app—we provide the visual proof that digital care is, at its heart, about improving human lives.

These images do more than fill a gallery; they populate the NHS app journeys, lead national press releases, and provide the “human face” for internal transformation programmes that help staff embrace new ways of working.

Visualising the Online Hospital

The brief was ambitious: deliver high-quality, consistent NHS Digital photography across dozens of hospitals and community clinics simultaneously. Working in “live” clinical environments meant our photographers had to operate with extreme sensitivity, ensuring patient privacy and zero disruption to life-saving care.

By utilising our multi-location photographer network, we avoided the high costs and carbon footprint of travel, instead deploying local professionals who understand their regional healthcare landscapes. This local approach allowed for a “fly-on-the-wall” reportage style that feels authentic rather than staged.

Every deliverable was managed via the UNP Picture Desk, providing the client with a single point of contact for a project spanning the entire United Kingdom.

Trusted Standards for Public Sector Media

Integrity is paramount when working with the public sector. Our photographers are briefed on NHS Identity guidelines to ensure every asset is brand-compliant. Furthermore, our workflow aligns with the communication standards set by the Department of Health and Social Care.

Whether it is capturing a high-profile visit for PR communications or documenting daily life in a clinic, we ensure the imagery reflects the professionalism and care synonymous with the NHS brand.

A Future-Proof Image Library

The result of this collaboration is a robust, diverse, and future-proof image library. From Bristol to the Highlands, the NHS now has a wealth of visual content to support the rollout of digital-first care models well into 2027 and beyond. The success of this project proves that even the most complex digital transformations are best explained through the eyes of the people living them.
