As I, Hamlet, the managing director of United National Photographers, sit here in the vast quiet of our office, I’m reminded that the pulse of our photo agency lies not within these walls today, but out there with our freelance photographers. They are the ones out in the field, lenses at the ready, capturing moments for press and PR that keep the heart of our enterprise beating. Our editorial team, the unsung heroes who usually curate these captured slices of life, have momentarily traded their critical eye for the thrill of the Black Friday hunt.

Hence, with our freelancers diligently working on commissions, our editorial staff has granted themselves a reprieve – a lunch hour stretched into an afternoon, perhaps even a day for some, to navigate the sea of sales. “Shop till you drop,” they said, a mantra for the day, leaving their usual posts for the promise of once-a-year deals. It’s an unusual quiet that’s settled over UNP – a calm sea after a bustling storm of activity.
I remain, the sole guardian of this silent sanctum, musing over the dedication of our field photographers who continue the work uninterrupted, their commitment unwavering even as the retail world turns upside down with discounts and deals. Perhaps next year, we at UNP might just ride the wave of Black Friday, offering our own deals. But for now, I await the return of my team, eager to hear of their exploits and to welcome back the familiar symphony of our bustling office life.

The photographic agency UNP and freelance photographer Mark Bickerdike expressed great satisfaction upon discovering that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak used their photographs on his official website. This recognition not only highlighted the quality of their work but also the importance of press and PR photography in conveying significant public events. During his visit to RAFA Kidz Leeming, Prime Minister Sunak engaged with children of military personnel and key nursery workers, immersing himself in the activities and facilities that make the nursery a cornerstone of support for RAF families. His participation in play activities and his visit to the Kidz Club facilities, as captured in Bickerdike’s photographs, were prominently featured, illustrating the day’s events and the nursery’s vital role in the community

RAFA Kidz Leeming, a childcare facility dedicated to serving the families of military personnel, was celebrating its one-year anniversary. The facility, known for its comprehensive childcare services, including wraparound care and support for children with special educational needs, was the backdrop for this significant visit.

For a news photographer like Bickerdike, the event presented both challenges and opportunities. The presence of the Prime Minister at a sensitive military location meant heightened security. Capturing the essence of the visit, while navigating these constraints, required not just technical skill but also a keen sense of timing and perspective.

Generative Photography: AI can create realistic images or simulate photographic styles by learning from a dataset of photographs. This can include generating images that don’t exist in reality but are photorealistic. 4. Subject and Scene Recognition: AI can analyse the content of photos for better indexing and searchability, recognizing faces, objects, scenes, and even the emotions of people in the photographs. 5. AI-Powered Editing Tools: AI assists in photo editing by suggesting edits, automating complex tasks (like object removal or sky replacement), and learning from user actions to make better suggestions over time. 6. Dynamic Photo Composition: AI can guide photographers on the best composition while taking photos by analysing the scene in real-time and suggesting framing or adjustments. 7. AI Curated Photography: AI systems can curate large collections of photographs to select the best ones according to certain criteria, which is especially useful in professional settings like photography for stock imagery or editorial use. 8. Photography by Autonomous Devices: AI-driven drones or robots can autonomously take photographs, deciding on the best time and composition based on programmed aesthetics or environmental readings.

In the foreground, there are several individuals dressed in high-visibility orange workwear, suggesting they could be railway workers or perhaps part of a demonstration. One of them is holding a two-way radio, while another has a tool that resembles a pickaxe.

The image captures a rather unique moment that blends whimsy with the mundane: a miniature steam engine train on tracks is being observed by a group of people. In the foreground, there are several individuals dressed in high-visibility orange workwear, suggesting they could be railway workers or perhaps part of a demonstration. One of them is holding a two-way radio, while another has a tool that resembles a pickaxe. Behind this group, there is a more casually dressed crowd, consisting of people of various ages, who seem to be spectators. The miniature train itself is emitting steam, which contributes to the authenticity of this scaled-down locomotive experience.
The overall feel of the image is lively and engaging, capturing an event that is likely of interest to model railway enthusiasts and the public alike. It reflects elements of press and reportage photography, capturing the event as it unfolds in a candid manner. Victor De Jesus, the freelance photographer, has effectively captured a moment that tells a story about the challenges and routines involved in maintaining public order and safety. It’s an editorial portrait of the officers at work, and it could well accompany an article discussing law enforcement in urban nightlife settings. The scene conveys a sense of immediacy and authenticity, hallmarks of skilled editorial photography.

Our editorial photographers have a distinct voice that echoes through their work. In editorial photography, each image is thoughtfully crafted to complement the narrative, enriching the story it’s meant to tell. UNP’s commitment to this craft extends to the poignant subtleties of editorial portrait photography, where the subject’s story is often told through a single, compelling image.

his image is a vibrant example of editorial and reportage photography, taken by freelance photographer Teri Pengilley for UNP. It features a group of four individuals on Westminster Bridge, with the iconic Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in the background, which immediately situates the event in London. The quartet is holding a large placard that reads "100,000+ people call on UK Gov to fund research NOW," with an image of a blood bag filled with what appears to be plastic pieces, underscoring the message "PLASTIC IS IN OUR BLOOD." Common Seas hands in a petition to 10 Downing Street. The individuals, presumably activists or representatives from Common Seas, are directly facing the camera, displaying the seriousness of their cause with earnest expressions. They stand united, conveying the urgency of their appeal to the government for research funding, and the photograph captures the essence of a significant social issue.

In storytelling photography, our photographers are akin to visual authors, each frame a sentence, every sequence a story. The freelance photographer in this domain has the unique task of finding the narrative thread in the tapestry of visuals they capture.

With this recognition from Adzooma, UNP is reminded of the company we’re in, alongside esteemed peers like Soho Management, AMP, JSR Agency, Lucid Representation, Wonderhatch, and Panos Pictures. Each agency brings its own flavor to the table, and it’s an honor to be leading such a talented ensemble.

While being number one is indeed a point of celebration, it’s the shared pursuit of excellence that resonates more deeply with us at UNP. We understand that photography is not just about the accolades but about the stories we tell and the legacies we leave behind through our lenses.

UNP’s journey is an ongoing narrative of passion, dedication, and the unwavering quest to capture life in its myriad forms. It’s a commitment to keeping the authentic essence of the world in view, one photo at a time.

Thank you to Adzooma for this recognition, and here’s to the stories yet to be captured, the moments waiting to be framed, and the continued celebration of this visual language that speaks so eloquently across borders and barriers

“Safeguarding Visual Creations: United National Photographers’ Stance on AI and Photo Protection”

United National Photographers (UNP), an organization with a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has shown exceptional foresight by appointing an AI Safety Officer. This strategic move comes in anticipation of the UK’s inaugural AI Safety Summit held at the historic Bletchley Park, a venue steeped in technological history.

Protecting photographs from AI is a complex challenge, and while the methods above offer some level of security, they are not foolproof. As we navigate this “wild west” of digital art protection, artists must stay vigilant, employing a combination of strategies to safeguard their creations. The future is uncertain, but by taking action now, artists can ensure they are prepared for whatever comes next.

In an era dominated by rapid technological advancements, the United National Photographers  is stepping up to play a pivotal role in AI safety and the protection of photographic works. With a deep understanding of the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI), UNP has taken the initiative to appoint an AI Safety Officer, showcasing their dedication to responsible AI development and usage.

However, the responsibility of protecting photos does not lie with UNP alone. Photographers themselves play a crucial role in safeguarding their creative output. In this comprehensive guide, we explore the various strategies and tools at the disposal of photographers, helping them to protect their photos from being misused in AI training sets.

1. Tagging Your Photos with a Twist:

AI training sets require vast amounts of accurately labeled data to function correctly. However, with billions of images circulating the web, relying on automated systems to tag these photos becomes a necessity. Photographers can take advantage of this by intentionally mislabeling their photos. By using unrelated or incorrect tags, the photos become less usable for AI training purposes, ensuring their safety from data-hungry algorithms.

2. Staking Your Claim with Copyright Protection:

Clear and robust copyright statements serve as a photographer’s first line of defense. Copyright protection is automatically granted to photos as soon as they are captured, and photographers should explicitly forbid the use of their photos in AI datasets. With terms such as, “Any unauthorized use of the photos, including but not limited to AI training, is strictly prohibited,” photographers can set clear boundaries and take legal action if necessary.

3. The Art of Watermarking:

While watermarks might detract from the aesthetic appeal of a photo, they play a vital role in protecting photos from misuse. Larger, more complex watermarks can confuse AI algorithms, rendering the photos unusable for training purposes. Experimenting with stable diffusion images and invisible watermarks can provide an additional layer of security, tricking AI into ignoring the photos altogether.

4. Exploring Protective Techniques:

Beyond watermarking, photographers can employ a variety of techniques to protect their work. From using WordPress plugins and JavaScript to display images, to adopting the “Walled Garden” approach, these strategies add an extra layer of security, shielding photos from AI crawlers.

5. Legal Recourse and Preparedness:

In instances where preventive measures fall short, legal action becomes necessary. By establishing a strong legal framework and clear terms of use, photographers ensure they have the foundation to challenge unauthorized use of their photos.

By combining the forward-thinking stance of UNP on AI safety with proactive protective measures for photos, photographers are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of the digital age. The journey to safeguard visual creations is complex, but with diligence, awareness, and the right tools, photographers can ensure the security of their work now and in the future.

Introduction: “An image speaks ten thousand words” – this timeless phrase is foundational in the world of Public Relations (PR). We at UNP, leader in PR Photography, present this guide to help PR account managers, marketing, and communication professionals leverage exceptional imagery for successful campaigns.

Section 1: The Power of PR Photography

1.1 Why Invest in High-Quality Images?

  • Success and Failure: As UNP emphasizes, photography is a visual language. High-resolution, captivating images tell your story more effectively than words alone, ensuring your campaigns resonate and engage.

1.2 Photography as a Resource

  • Your brand’s image is paramount. Regardless of business size, allocating budget and resources for top-quality photography is crucial. UNP’s extensive portfolio demonstrates how impactful images enhance visibility across various media channels, social platforms, and your website.

Section 2: Choosing the Right PR Photographer

2.1 The Importance of Professionalism

  • UNP’s team of skilled photographers underscores the importance of quality in PR imagery. Investing in experienced professionals guarantees that your visuals align with your brand’s message and values.

2.2 Building Long-Term Relationships

  • A reliable photographer becomes an invaluable asset to your PR efforts. Following UNP’s example, cultivate long-lasting partnerships with photographers who understand your brand, ensuring consistency and potentially favorable long-term rates.

Section 3: Crafting the Perfect Brief

3.1 The Role of a Clear Brief

PR pgotographers images, from a PR photography perspective, tell a story and capture moments that can connect with audiences on an emotional level, promoting the ideas of freshness, nature, and well-being.

  • A clear, comprehensive brief is a non-negotiable for successful PR photography. It sets the stage for the shoot, ensuring the photographer captures your vision accurately.

3.2 Collaborative Efforts

  • Engage in a creative dialogue with your PR photographer, much like UNP’s approach to client collaboration. This ensures a mutual understanding of objectives, themes, and the overall narrative of the campaign.

Section 4: Navigating News Media Photography

4.1 Understanding the Differences

  • Recognizing the distinction between PR and news photographers is crucial. PR photographers thrive on detailed briefs, whereas news photographers, immersed in media stories, require a more flexible approach.

4.2 The Advantage of Experience

  • A commercial photographer with a background in media, like those at UNP, brings invaluable experience, ensuring your PR photos meet stringent media standards.

Section 5: Attention to Detail

5.1 Ensuring Technical Accuracy

  • Adhere to best practices in image sizing and resolution, as UNP consistently does in their work. Ensure your images are print-ready, maintaining a minimum of 300 DPI for optimal quality.

5.2 Group Photos: Best Practices

  • Mastering group photography demands attention to positioning, focus, and group dynamics. Whether you’re behind the camera or working with a seasoned PR photographer, these elements are essential for a successful shot.

Section 6: Maintaining High Standards

6.1 Developing a Critical Eye

  • Uphold the highest standards in PR photography by consistently evaluating and critiquing your visual content. As UNP’s portfolio exemplifies, attention to detail before, during, and after the shoot is key to impactful imagery.

6.2 The Limitations of Editing

  • While tools like Adobe Lightroom offer robust editing capabilities, they cannot correct every issue. Ensuring optimal lighting and composition during the shoot is paramount, a practice consistently upheld by UNP’s professionals.

Conclusion: Harnessing the power of PR photography transforms your campaigns, making your stories not just seen, but felt. Inspired by UNP’s expertise, this guide aims to equip PR account managers, marketing, and communication professionals with the knowledge and tools to create visually compelling narratives.

It’s crucial to highlight that UNP not only excels in producing high-quality imagery but also sets a standard in adhering to legal and ethical practices. The award, a testament to Jenny’s exceptional gardening skills, saw her utilising her allotment space to the fullest, creating an enriching family hobby. Jenny, 47, caught the eye of the competition’s judge, social media influencer and horticulture enthusiast Michael Griffiths, also known as the Mediterranean Gardener. Griffiths was particularly struck by Jenny’s inventive approach to cultivating her own produce, praising her for transforming an ordinary allotment into a space of familial joy and botanical creativity.

Jenny’s journey into the world of gardening was somewhat serendipitous, sparked when her husband Phil secured a spot on the local Allotment Society waiting list. Reflecting on her childhood, Jenny recalled fond memories in her grandmother’s garden, which planted the seed for her future passion. However, it was not until March 2021, when an allotment space became available, that her enthusiasm fully blossomed. The allotment offered Jenny and her family a canvas to express their creativity, fostering a shared hobby that even enticed their 13-year-old daughter, April, to cultivate her own strawberry bed.

“Gardening for us is a sanctuary,” Jenny shared, emphasising the therapeutic aspects of her hobby. “It’s a space to relax, to think freely, and to engage in the joyful challenge of nurturing a crop from seed to harvest.” She encourages others to embark on their gardening journey, highlighting the simplicity of starting with a pack of seeds and watching them transform under attentive care.
